Fed: Federal govt should foot bill for regional airport safety

Local government representatives say the federal government should foot the entire
bill for regional airport security upgrades.

The government has announced a $94 million package to bolster airport security, with
$14 million allocated to regional areas.

Local Government Association of NSW president SARA MURRAY says the sum will only cover
half the costs regional airports face to establish and maintain appropriate security measures.

Councillor MURRAY says local government should not be handed a $14 million bill for
national security measures.

And Shires Association of NSW president PHYLLIS MILLER says the cost for regional airports
will have a negative impact on rural communities.
